Q&A
What is the difference between JOINERY and CARPENTRY? Joinery is manufacturing items using hand tools, power tools and wood machines. It is the base of woodworking, making wood jointing accurately to produce an item. A joiner would manufacture doors, windows, staircases, frames, etc… A number of evening classes are based on Joinery. Carpentry is related to the building trade but joinery skills are needed. A carpenter would fit the doors, windows and staircases produced by the joiner. Carpentry would also relate to 1st and 2nd fixings (floor joists, skirting, roofing, door hanging and much more). Carpentry evening and daytime classes will start as from September 2022.
Can I get qualified by attending a class? No. I am not registered with an awarding body, therefore the courses are not accredited. All the classes that I offer are recreational only.
I am a complete beginner, can I join a class? Absolutely! The ‘Basic Woodworking Skills’ evening class (course 1) is perfect for beginners. I will show you how to safely use hand tools and some power tools to produce a beautiful picture frame holding 4 photos. This class will give you the confidence to progress to all the other courses. There is a beginners part 2 (course 2) if you wish to continue your journey by producing further complex wood joints.
I feel quite confident working with wood already. Are there other classes I could join to progress? Yes. There are a number of intermediate and advanced classes in Woodworking, Joinery and in Carpentry.
I just want to have fun and make something for myself or to give as a present to a loved one. Do you offer such classes? Yes. On all the courses, you will be able to produce an item to take home. Courses 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are super fun. Some are open to children 12+ with parents.
Do you offer classes for children? Yes. There are sessions that runs once a term, for a set of 4 weeks (1.5 h per week). Children must be 12 or over and the block of sessions must be booked through ‘Live to Learn Education and Tutoring’ by email on livetolearnexmouth@gmail.com. Children as from aged 12* and over can also join their parent(s) on the courses 10, 11 and 12*.
Do you offer one to one sessions? Yes. Whether you are after learning new skills or want to make something with my support, I can help you. These run on Fridays only.
How do I book a place? Email me on mfhwoodworking@hotmail.com with your full name, home address, email address and a contact number. Do tell me which class you would like to attend please.
What will the process be once I have sent you my information? An invoice will be sent to you by email, requesting a 20% non-refundable deposit. Once the deposit has been paid, your booking is confirmed and a deposit receipt will be sent to you by email. I will send you a reminder to pay the rest, two weeks before the start date of the class.
How can I pay? Once you have received the invoice, you can pay via bank transfer (preferred) or cash on the first night. The non-refundable deposit must be paid via bank transfer only. Can I buy a gift voucher? Yes, but full payment will be required within 7 days of the invoice.
